The Nepenthes of Indochina – a historical term which includes Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and
Vietnam – remained in obscurity for almost a century. The first species coming from those countries
were described at the beginning of 1900. Then wars and dictatorships made the area inaccessible,
preventing the study and classification of a group of plants that we might define as problematic, to say
the least. Very similar leaves and pitchers, even when belonging to different species, contributed to
confuse both taxonomists and growers since when, in the Seventies, a revived interest for carnivorous
plants brought several Indochinese Nepenthes into our western greenhouses. All this was brought to
the author's attention just in 2001, while he was working at Kew Gardens, in London. A spark, that
lighted a fire. How to resist to such a temptation? Unexplored lands, unknown plants, a situation
remained unsolved for a hundred years... In 2004 the adventure started: the first trip to Thailand (to
which another four followed) and the quest for the answer to a good number of questions, that for a
while just increased. Of all events it was taken note, and the final result of that six years long undertaking
has finally become a book. With 207 color pages (in ITALIAN language, shiny paper, hard cover,
18 x 25 cm), 185 photos of plants in the wild, four new species and a new variety described for the
first time, Nepenthes della Thailandia is the insane diary of the most irresponsible, obsessed, cynical,
stubborn and penniless naturalist in the history of botany. Take a look inside.
